Our Story

Hugo grew up in Glebe, an old Georgian vicarage situated on a hilltop in the East Devonshire countryside. Throughout his childhood there was a constant hum of guests flowing through Glebe’s doors, as his parents, Emma and Chuck, ran it as a generous, homely and foodie bed and breakfast. As years went on it became clear that Glebe had become a sanctuary and special place, not only for the family, but to anyone who passed through the doors.

Having met and married Olive, the couple spent some time in Italy and became inspired by agrotourismos; working farms with accommodation and small restaurants generously showcasing all of the artisan products from that particular farm. It was reminiscent of Glebe and the surrounding land − with its abundance of incredible food produce and spoils of natural ingredients.

After honing his craft as a chef in top London restaurants, in 2020 Hugo and the family moved from London, and set to work on turning Glebe into an English ‘agroturismo’ with an emphasis on food and art experiences. They built a vegetable garden with a polytunnel, cutting gardens, an on site bakery and temperature controlled ageing room for salumi production. Each would play a key role in supporting the artisan techniques that go into the food at Glebe House.

This dedication to craft is at the heart of everything the team do at Glebe House and is also evident throughout the house with Olive’s passion for art; the rooms are adorned with her own work and murals as well as carefully curated work from local artists and handmade objects and ceramics.

With this commitment to a slower way of life, the couple enjoying sharing and celebrating this corner of the world and all its bounty, and their guests leave feeling nourished, rested and inspired.
